Summary: Joyce goes on a blind date.

Joyce took a long sip of wine to calm her nerves before she glanced around the restaurant looking for any sign of her date for this evening. Looking for anyone who matched the description of the man that her friend Sandy set her up with on a blind date. Her date in question was described to be about 6'0 ft in height with short light brown hair, hazel eyes, and was about five years older than she was. And he would be wearing a white lily in the lapel of his jacket.

Joyce touched the matching white lily that was tucked behind her right ear for a second. Then, she brought her hand down to the table and picked up her glass. The older woman considered for a brief moment on taking another sip of wine. Joyce quickly dismissed the idea and pushed the half filled wine glass to the side.

One more drink, and she would get tipsy. And Joyce was rather hesitant to be publicly intoxicated with a man she never met before.

This had to be one of the worst mistakes she has made in a long while. At this point in her life, she really wasn't looking to date anyone. And frankly she was more than a bit leery of Sunnydale's dating scene after that whole fiasco with Ted. Yet, with Buffy gone off to college, she was feeling a bit lonely and was persuaded by her friends puppy eyes of doom to go on this blind date. At which she was now feverishly regretting.

Joyce looked down at her watch and sighed. Five more minutes, and then she was leaving.

"Joyce?"

Rupert cheeks turned red as he looked at the flower in her hair. And then she followed his gaze down to the lapel of his jacket that she was shocked to find a matching white lily pined there.

"It seems I am to be your date for this evening." Rupert nervously adjusted his glasses on his nose.

Joyce froze for a long moment. Her mind processing the recent turn of events as her shock switched from her initial embarrassment to something of a pleased warmth that swirled in her chest. It had been almost a year and a half since that Band Candy incident. Joyce flushed as she thought back to that night of how alive Rupert's alter ego Ripper had made her feel. And since then how much she had come to treasure this man's friendship and presence in not only her daughter's life, but her own as well.

"I should go." Rupert said, shaking her out of her thoughts.

Joyce gave him a warm smile. "No, please stay." she waved to the empty seat across from her.

"Are you quite sure? "

Her smile grew into a broad grin. "I Insist."

And as Mr. Giles sat down, Joyce couldn't help but think that this blind date wouldn't be so terrible after all.

And I thought I was the only one who wanted Giles and Joyce to get together on the show!
I really wish they had taken Joyce's personal life (as a woman, not just as Buffy's mom) more seriously, instead of being the butt of the joke. Those two together would have been formidable - and still have had plenty of drama and arguement.

I loved when we started seeing more of Joyce in S5, and then that date and her teasing her daughter - and then of course she had to die, right?

Is this an "older" fic? I never check dates when I read.

I also hate that they didn't really give her and Giles an outside life beyond the scoobies. And there is so much drama, and in my opinion they have more chemistry than Giles and Jenny did. *le sigh*

I never thought about it in comparative terms and I loved Jenny - she was intelligent, sexy, confident - but you've got a good point. They certainly had chemistry - and history. I just wrote a meta about Anne on my LJ about Buffy's depression in that ep, but the next meta for Anne I want to do is that scene where Joyce expresses her anger at Giles for taking away her daughter. That's an amazing scene and one of the few where Joyce gets to be a "real person".

It bothers me that the show really lacked more older women, mentors, teachers, etc and not just mothers. Maggie Walsh was evil (and gets killed); Jenny betrays Buffy then gets killed, Joyce is just a good mom, goes out on a nice date, and gets killed. I'm sensing a pattern here.

I kept rooting for them to put Giles and Joyce together all the way until the Body, honestly. Imagine THAT level of drama and mourning! (Ok, I hated that they killed her, but whatever.)

I've only written one meta about Joyce on my LJ so far, about Buffy's promise to Joyce re: Dawn but I want to do more, I watched the show for the first time just this spring, and I'm really surprised how little is written in fandom about Joyce, either in meta or fic; especially when the preponderance of fans in the little pockets I hang out in are women.

How long have you been a buffy fan?

Ok, so not old. (But I know what you mean about forgetting stuff. I'd blame age but I've always been this way.)

I really did like Jenny - but I've only watched the early seasons one time. Mostly I love seasons 5-7 and can rewatch them endlessly. S2 was stunning - or rather, the Angelus arc was, I don't remember anything else in that season to be honest - but I can't bring myself to watch it again. Jenny's death shook me up like nothing else on tv - EXCEPT Giles finding her in his bed. Mother of mercy...

I don't know if the actress or the character itself that just rubs me the wrong way

Oh, I'm exactly the same way about Charisma Carpenter as Cordy. I've never admitted before to anyone else in fandom because it felt really shallow. I know the characters is not supposed to be "likeable" and I didn't hate the character but I didn't enjoy looking at the actress. I know that's terrible. (Then Cordy got impaled - talk about a metaphor for a broken heart but that's a bit OTT, no? And there's that scene in the Wish where she's not wearing any makeup, looking haggard, burning photos of herself and the Scoobies, and I thought they'd finally give her more depth and I wanted to see what Charisma Carpenter could do with the role - but we didn't get much of that on BtVS. I hear she's awesome on AtS but I haven't watched it yet.)

the adults weren't really awesome on the show

Joss' "all parents are bad parents" trope was really rather weird, IMO. Working out his issues? Or does he just believe that even relatively happy families and good parents lack drama? I don't know where he got that idea from.
